Car insurance has been around for as long as anyone can remember. Seen by many as more of a hassle than help, car insurance has on many occasions been the savior of many drivers. However, for smaller accidents, car insurance companies are rarely involved, as the resulting increase in premiums will be far more expensive than covering the one time cost of repairs. One cannot help but question the validity of a car insurance agent that is avoided for all but the most serious accidents. Would you buy a health insurance package that you only planned to use on your death bed? This example is clearly an exaggeration of the issue at hand, but it does help to prove the point.
Another area of concern I have encountered with car insurance is who exactly is covered if they drive my car. How frequently does one of my friends have to drive my car before they need to be included on my car insurance plan as a secondary driver? I have several friends who in the past have needed to borrow my car for whatever reason and I have always agreed to their request thinking that they were covered under my plan. Recently, however, I have been told by numerous sources that this is not always covered in a basic car insurance package. Admittedly it is my responsibility to know the details of my car insurance policy, but I cannot help but think that there should be an industry standard on details of this nature. Nonetheless, as a driver I am forced to have car insurance, no matter how useless I may find it.
