Dental insurance is something that is often taken for granted by those that have it. Growing up, I had dental insurance provided through my mother’s provider. However, when I graduated university and entered the ‘real world’, I no longer enjoyed the benefits of dental insurance. Not until my first dental checkup after this point in my life did I realize just how valuable my dental insurance was. The cost of just a simple 15 minute dental cleaning was several hundred dollars. While I am yet to require any more complex services, just the prospect of having to pay thousands of dollars for a procedure is enough to keep me brushing at least 3 times everyday. I have also started flossing religiously in order to avoid needing anything that I will not be able to afford without dental insurance.
Hopefully when I am able to land a job that offers dental insurance, I will continue with my new strict regimen for oral hygiene. Unfortunately, dental insurance, like health insurance, is often abused and used as a fall back. I think most people would try to live a healthier life if they had to pay for any medical assistance that they ever needed. The same is likely true with dental insurance, and people may not brush or floss as often as they know they should because their dentist will just clean their teeth at their next appointment. Whether this theory is true is hard to prove, but I will continue to believe that having dental insurance makes people lazier with their oral hygiene.
